A New Aetosaur from the Upper Triassic (adamanian: Carnian) of Arizona

چکیده
Adamanasuchus eisenhardtae is a new genus and species of aetosaur from the Upper Triassic (Adamanian: late Carnian) Blue Mesa Member of the Petrified Forest Formation (Chinle Group) in the Petrified Forest National Park, east-central Arizona. Known from part of its dorsal armor, caudal vertebrae, and a femur, A. eisenhardtae is distinguished by relatively narrow and arched paramedian osteoderms with sparse pitting and faint ridges distributed in a very limited radial pattern, raised anterior bars, ventral keels, and a ridge or eminence that meets the posterior edge of the osteoderm, and lateral osteoderms with low, pyramidal spikes, sparsely distributed pits and faint ridges and relatively shallow arching. The distinctive characteristics of the dorsal armor of A. eisenhardtae are a mosaic of features, most of which are found singly or doubly in other aetosaur genera. This indicates a much more complex evolution of aetosaur armor than previously understood.

Biostratigraphic Utility of the Upper Triassic Aetosaur Tecovasuchus (archosauria:stagonolepididae), an Index Taxon of St. Johnsian (adamanian:late Carnian) Time
The recently recognized aetosaur Tecovasuchus chatterjeei Martz and Small occurs at several localities in lower Chinle Group strata across Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. Based on lithostratigraphic correlation and other vertebrate occurrences, all Tecovasuchus occurrences are of Adamanian age. Indeed, all occurrences are consistent with assignment to the St. Johnsian sub-land vertebrate faunac...

—Topographically low exposures of Upper Triassic Chinle Group strata near St. Johns, Arizona, overlie the Middle Triassic Moenkopi Formation and can be assigned to four formation-rank units. These are, in ascending order, the Zuni Mountains (= “mottled strata”), Shinarump, Bluewater Creek (= “Mesa Redondo”), and Petrified Forest formations. Petrified Forest Formation strata in the vicinity of S...

A partial skeleton of the aetosaur Stagonolepis sp. is the first tetrapod body fossil recovered from Upper Triassic strata in Canyonlands National Park. The specimen consists of a partial tooth and numerous disarticulated vertebrae, ribs, and scutes found in the Blue Mesa Member of the Petrified Forest Formation (Chinle Group) near Upheaval Dome. Stagonolepis is an index taxon of the Adamanian ...

The Triassic System in Arizona has yielded numerous world-class fossil specimens, including numerous type specimens. The oldest Triassic vertebrates from Arizona are footprints and (largely) temnospondyl bones from the Nonesian (Early Triassic: Spathian) Wupatki Member of the Moenkopi Formation. The Perovkan (early Anisian) faunas of the Holbrook Member of the Moenkopi Formation are exceptional...

Aetosaurians are some of the most common fossils collected from the Upper Triassic Chinle Formation of Arizona, especially at the Petrified Forest National Park (PEFO). Aetosaurians collected from lower levels of the park include Desmatosuchus spurensis, Paratypothorax, Adamanasuchus eisenhardtae, Calyptosuchus wellesi, and Scutarx deltatylus. Four partial skeletons collected from the park betw...
